musings

MSNBC BROADCAST A DOCUMENTARY called, "Supersize Me," a film made in 2004 about the health risks resulting from eating primarily in fast-food restaurants. As part of the movie, they had a piece in which they demonstrated how media advertising has "brain-washed" our children.

The host showed three pictures to some children of elementary school age. The first picture was a familiar portrait of our first president, George Washington. Only one of them was able to identify him and then in a somewhat unsure manner. The next picture was an artist rendering of Jesus Christ. They didn't have a clue who He was! But when they were shown a photograph of Ronald MacDonald, all of them instantly shouted his name. Says a lot, doesn't it?

I think we may be raising a whole generation of biblical illiterates. And the sad thing is that it's not their fault! Sunday school is not a priority for most families. Parents do not take the time to sit with an open Bible and read the great stories to their children. Without a good, solid foundation, we are setting our children adrift in the sea of life. Hence, they will just go with the flow of ideas and opinions. Or, as I recall someone saying, their houses (lives) are being built on sand instead of the Rock!

Getting back to the documentary, certainly we do need to pay attention to what we are putting into our bodies. They are a gift and a temple of God. We are stewards and will one day have to give an account of how we treated them. Undisciplined eating will lead to a poor quality of life and perhaps even an early departure from this one. But we also need to be feeding our souls with the sure truth of God. We are a trinity---made in God's image. We are far more than body and mind. We have an eternal soul that also needs to be fed. Pray for our children that they will not grow up bereft of a knowledge of God and His amazing love.

Hi, and Thank you Pastor Bruce!

I want so much for my sons to be teens that attend Sunday School. I would love to see it happen.

If anyone who reads this would pray for my teens, for my older 4 boys, David (20), Gabe (19), Stephen (17), and Andrew (15), and also invite them to Sunday School - any class that you think that they might be willing to come to, please do.

My younger 2 boys, Josh, and Matt, come along with my wife and I to church. They are young enough to be happy to do what I tell them to do, and so they come because I tell them that it's what is best for them.

But some of these older boys, are at odds with me about my leading my family to know God, and to become deeply involved with my church. Some of my boys feel that I'm forcing my religion on them. My 15 year old shuns the idea of youth group and Sunday school. He feels that it's for 'kids.' I'm at a loss... (but the Boundaries for Teens class is helping!)

I want my boys to know about Sunday School, but I need help. It seems that I can't sway them myself, I need God's help via your prayers and actions. God can move mountains, can you be moved?
